A Study on the amount and types of Psychological Dysfunction in Infertile Women


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the amount and types of Psychological dysfunction in infertile women in order to provide data for planning and implementing individualized nursing care. The nursing goal is to reduce emotional pain, maintain stability and promote self affirmation.
Data were gathered from Sept. 11 to Nov. 15, 1987, from 50 clients with visiting the infertility clinic in one university hospital in Seoul.
Data measuring the level of psychological dysfunction were gathered by Derogatis¢¥ Symptom Check List-90 and Bernstein¢¥s Infertility Questionnaire, modified by the researcher.
Data were analyzed by t-test and ANOVA.
Conclusions obtained included the following:
1. The amount of psychological dysfunction clients scoring within the normal range numbered 31(62%) while those within the mild psychological dysfunction range numbered 19(38%).
2. The two instruments together identify 12 types of psychological dysfunction, Somatization, Obsessive compulsive behavior, Interpersonal . sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Hostality, Phobic anxiety, Paranoid Ideation, Psychotism, Self-esteem, Blame/ Guilty and Sexuality.
In this subject group, the primarily identified dysfunctions were sexuality (1.9543; a group average score in a possible range from functional to dysfunctional of 0-4), Self-esteem (1.7850), Obsessive compulsive behavior (1.1360), Depression (1.0185) and Blame/ Guilty (1.0120).
3. The only client general characteristic related with the total dysfunctional score was educational level.
Clients with lower education than higher education had higher .dysfunctional scores (P= .044).
Recommendations were made in regard to research on the sensitivity on the instrument with this client group.
Further research is needed to identify the complexity of factors influencing infertility client¢¥s responses to their health problem.
